5 Digital Security Musts for Interior Designers (Because Your Business Deserves Protection Too)
Before I launched my design studio, I spent years working in IT consulting—so trust me when I say, digital security isn't just for big tech companies or IT teams. Whether you're a solo designer or running a growing studio, your business holds sensitive info that deserves protection.
From client contracts and floor plans to vendor portals and payment info, there's a lot at stake. And I’ve seen firsthand how easy it is to overlook the basics—until something goes wrong. Now, as someone who blends creativity with process for a living, I want to share the practical tools that can give you peace of mind and keep your business running smoothly.
Here are five simple, sanity-saving security tips I recommend to every interior designer and creative entrepreneur I know:
1. Don’t Share Passwords—Like Ever
It might feel easier to hand off your login to an assistant or bookkeeper, but it’s a slippery slope. Most platforms offer team accounts (or at least user access options) that keep everything secure and trackable. Trust me—spending a few extra bucks on proper access is way better than untangling a hacked account later.
2. Use a Password Manager (I Like 1Password)
If your “system” is a sticky note on your desk or one password for everything... It’s time for a reset. Tools like 1Password store all your logins securely and let you share access when needed—without actually revealing the password. Plus, they autofill everything, which makes your life easier and safer.
3. Turn On Multi-Factor Authentication (Yes, It’s Worth It)
That extra little text code or app notification when you log in? Annoying, but necessary. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) gives your accounts a second layer of protection and dramatically reduces your risk of being hacked. Activate it for email, social, bank accounts—everything.
4. Back It Up Like It’s Part of Your Workflow
I can’t count how many clients I’ve seen lose files because they didn’t have a backup. And in our world, your visuals, contracts, and mood boards are everything. Set up an automatic cloud backup—Google Drive, Dropbox, iCloud, whatever works for you. That way, if your laptop crashes (or coffee strikes again), your business isn’t starting from scratch.
5. Avoid Public Wi-Fi Without a VPN
Designing from a cute coffee shop sounds dreamy until someone swipes your login details on an open network. If you’re pulling up client floor plans or logging into bank accounts at the coffee shop, use a VPN (Virtual Private Network). It encrypts your connection so your data stays private. I like ExpressVPN, but there are lots of solid options out there.
Bonus: Keep Everything Updated
Your software, your apps, your devices. I know the "update now?" pop-ups are annoying, but those patches are often fixing security issues you don’t even know about. Turn on auto-updates when you can and keep things current.
Final Thoughts
These small changes don’t require a huge budget or technical background—just intention. And they go a long way in helping you feel more confident and secure in your business.
If this stuff feels overwhelming, know that you’re not alone. Creatives don’t get into this work because we love the tech and security side. But a little bit of protection goes a long way toward protecting what you’ve worked so hard to build.
